The Red Aunts/New Kingdom/The Eyeliners
October 19, 1996
Dingo Bar, Albuquerque

It's seems that the only reason I have a good time at Red Aunts shows is because of the cool opening bands. Last time they came through, the Cheater Slicks blew me away as the Red Aunts (I assumed) just had a bad set. Those bad sets are becoming more of a trend, though. The ladies bitched their way through the entire set complaining of bad mixing of the sound, losing a contact lens, and wondering why the Drags (everyone's favorite Albuquerque punk band) weren't on the bill.

If the Drags were on the bill, I know which band they should have replaced. They left such a bad taste in my mouth that I didn't talk to them after the show, and chances are they didn't want to say much anyway. The Eyeliners (the artists formally known as Psychodrama) opened up adequately, and considering what I heard from them when they first started, these girls are starting to really get it together.

The highlight of the show was definitely New Kingdom. This New York punk rap group came on full force, and they even had a dancer/crowd pleasing dread man on board. They bounced, rapped, rocked, and grooved for about forty-five feel good minutes. Most importantly, they at least faked that they were having fun putting on a show. Is that too much to ask, nowadays?
